Melexis MLX81350 automotive small motor driver

MLX81350 is the company’s fourth-generation of automotive motor driver with LIN communication, delivering up to 5W (0.5A) per motor.

For a seemingly simple application, this IC packs a lot of technology.

Firstly, it is built on a high-voltage SOI (silicon-on-insulator) process, its is designed according to ASIL B (ISO 26262) functional safety standards, and it implements sensorless field-oriented control (FOC).

To support functional safety and FOC, it has two of the company’s MLX16-FX processor cores with on-board flash and ram.

“At the core of the MLX81350 is its evolved software architecture, designed to enhance performance and efficiency over the previous generation,” according to Melexis. “Key to this advancement is improved stall detection and the addition of closed-loop FOC. This enables smoother motor operation, lower current consumption and reduced acoustic noise.” – The new IC is pin-to-pin compatible with some of these earlier generation ICs.

Then a third processor, a MLX4 with its own memories, operates the 2.x/SAE J2602 and ISO 17987-4 compliant LIN interface.

Built-in protection and diagnostic features include over-current, over-voltage and over-temperature shut-down, and the device can directly from a 12V supply (5.5 to 28V) via internal voltage regulators.

Other peripherals include four general-purpose I/Os (digital and analogue, one of which is nominiate as ‘high-voltage’ without further explanation), UART, SPI, I2C, 5x 16bit PWM timers, 2x 16bit general timers and a multi-channel 13bit <1.2µs ADC.

Max stand-by is claimed to be 50µA (25µA typ).

Packaging is QFN24 or SOIC8.

Find the MLX81350 on this Melexis product page but, as is disappointingly common with automotive ICs, only a data brief is available, not the full data sheet.

In September, the same company introduced a 40W motor IC with field-oriented control.
