After its deal ended with the Max streaming service, (now HBO Max) Sesame Street is finding a new home on Netflix, the company announced Monday. Season 56 will kick off with new episodes to air later this year, along with 90 hours of past episodes available to Netflix’s global subscriber base. Cookie Monster helped share the announcement — and his excitement — with an energetic “Whoa” that tells us this is a surprise that fans of all ages can look forward to.

Netflix plans to stream the show in a new format with “episodes [that] will now center on one 11-minute story, allowing for even more character-driven humor and heart.” However, you’ll still be able to watch Elmo’s World and Cookie Monster’s Foodie Truck, and Sesame Street will continue to drop episodes on local PBS stations and all PBS Kids digital platforms as simulcasts. The new run of episodes will hit the streamer in three installments.

Kids can check out new additions like Cookie Monster’s Cookie Cart and Abby’s Fairy Garden, which takes you along with her as she cares for magical beings. You’ll also be introduced to Tales from 123, an animated segment that goes inside Sesame Street’s most popular building. Beyond streaming TV show episodes, Netflix said it will be able to create video games for Sesame Street and Sesame Street Mecha Builders.

Back in 2022, HBO Max removed roughly 200 episodes of the beloved show, and in December 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery chose not to renew its contract. Sesame Street, which has been on the air since 1969, currently has 20 seasons available to stream on HBO Max. A selection of its library will stay on that platform through 2027.
