The CEOs of Google and Microsoft say that up to 30% of their companies’ code is now being generated by AI tools.
The CEO of Meta’s says he’ll invest between $60-65 billion in 2025 “to support our artificial-intelligence efforts,” adding that “maybe half of the engineering work on future Llama models would be handled by AI agents over the next year. . . . .writing higher quality code than the average very good person on the team.”
Gartner reckons that 75% of enterprise software engineers will use AI coding assistants by 2028.
This seems like bad news for coders although Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott says humans would move up to work at higher levels of abstraction like authorship and design.
On the other hand, a Microsoft Research study found even the best LLM agents solved less than 50% of debugging tasks on the SWE-bench Lite benchmark.
Software hiring levels in the US are at their lowest point in five years – down more than 33% from 2020 levels.
