Eight Core CPUs Have Become the Most Popular Chips With 32.6% of the Share; AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D Played a Huge Role
Not only did the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D take the number one spot in multiple stores for selling the most units, but it also took the most popular CPU badge as per the latest stats by CPU-Z. CPU-Z is a program that collects data as per the validation by users. It’s certainly not the most accurate way to measure the popularity of CPUs, but it’s a great alternative to checking the stats according to the shipments.
Very recently, we reported AMD taking almost 80% of the CPU market as per the Amazon US March shipments, but that is very specific and only considers a small portion of the worldwide CPU data. However, CPU-Z statistics are more comprehensive and collect data from users worldwide and show the yearly change. As per the data on 1st April 2025, AMD has gained almost 16.6% of CPU market share while Intel lost 10%. It’s a huge difference and shows that AMD is very close to surpassing Intel for the first time.
The CPU that helped AMD make such a huge jump is the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which is also the most popular CPU right now. The CPU has been dominating the sales for weeks, and this is evident from the 4.3% share. AMD Ryzen 5 5600X comes second with 2.1% users. This also drastically affected the most popular core configuration, with 8-core CPUs being the most popular with an increase of 32.6% year-on-year.
The 8-core CPUs now make up 24.7% of the total systems validated on CPU-Z, followed by 6-core CPUs with a 22.5% share, then by 4-core CPUs with a 19.4% share, and then 2-core CPUs with a 9.6% share. This led to a massive jump in the popularity of the AM5 socket, which, although it is in second position with a 15.1% share, the year-on-year increase is 144.9%, while AM4 is still the most popular with a 20.1% share but decreased by 11%.
Further data shows that users prefer settling with budget chipsets like the B650 rather than spending on more expensive chipsets like the X870/X870E, as it offers plenty of features for users and is compatible with all the AM5 processors, including the Ryzen 7000 and 9000 CPUs. The current stats also show NVIDIA dropping in popularity by 6.4% and AMD gaining in the GPU market by 16.6%. Even though NVIDIA maintains the top position, AMD has been capturing the GPU market steadily since 2021.
