Apple is introducing some meaningful changes to its iPhone 17 lineup later this year, starting with possibly introducing the exceptionally thin iPhone 17 Air, along with a potential name change given to the top-end version. For years now, the Cupertino giant has separated all of its handsets from the premium offering by sticking with the ‘Pro Max’ moniker and looking at previous launches, you could not be blamed if you thought that the iPhone 17 Pro Max would be a part of the new family. However, one rumor claims that this exact model could be called the iPhone 17 Ultra, along with some notable upgrades arriving to the flagship.

On the Naver blog, popular tipster ‘yeux1122’ mentions some information retrieved from Weibo sources in Taiwan, who provide the changes arriving to the iPhone 17 Pro Max under the ‘US investment report content, supply chain trend source summary.’ First, the name change, and to remind you, it is not the first time that Apple has explored this option, with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman mentioning in 2022 that the company may call the iPhone 15 Pro Max the iPhone 15 Ultra.
The reporter was recently a part of a podcast, where he was invited as a guest and discussed Apple’s future product launches. Based on some guesswork, Gurman stated that Apple’s first foldable iPhone could be called the ‘iPhone Ultra’ because it is the ultimate representation of the company’s efforts that go beyond delivering the traditional smartphone form factor to the masses. As for the rest of the upgrades, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is rumored to offer a smaller Dynamic Island, resulting in an increased ‘screen to body’ ratio, along with two changes we discussed in earlier reports.
Coming to the vapor chamber, this internal change is said to arrive to the iPhone 17 Pro Max and also the smaller iPhone 17 Pro, allowing the A19 Pro SoC to operate at its optimum performance levels. Additionally, Apple’s top-end model could be getting thicker this year, most likely to accommodate a larger battery, with this change probably happening because Apple will proceed to slightly alter the design of the ‘Pro’ models.
