It will be the forerunner of a number of similar centres designed meet increasing air traffic. It will replace the existing SouthernATCC.
These facts – the first detailed statement on official policy – were revealed by Captain V. A. M. Hunt, the Ministry of Aviation’s Director of Control and Navigation, Development and Planning, in London last week.
He was presenting a paper on the long-term plan for ATC to the Institute of Navigation.
Speaking of the implementation of UK plans. Capt. Hunt said:“The first step will be to introduce, at the new Southern ATCC when it opens in 1964, a system for processing and printing flight plans within the Centre.”
Similar systems are in various states of development in many countries, he said. Those already in use are rather primitive and are not making much direct contribution to live air traffic control, but the lessons learnt from them are invaluable.
