In the 1960s TI lobbied hard to get Japanese government approval to build a fab in Japan.
In 1968, when the fab eventually materialised, Chang was a vp at TI.
At last Friday’s ceremony Chang recounted how, when he first met Akio Morita, Morita had told him: “You will be pleasantly surprised by the yield you will achieve in Japan.”
“Mr. Morita’s prediction came true,” said Chang at the Kumamoto opening, adding: “We are waiting to see if we are pleasantly surprised by the yield this time.”
