Out of the blue, as often is the case with new Valve products and technologies, SteamVR users were treated to the announcement that their virtual reality games can now be streamed wirelessly to Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, or Meta Quest Pro devices thanks to the Steam Link app now available via the Meta Quest Store.

Minimum Requirements

  • A computer running Steam and SteamVR
  • Supported OS: Windows 10 or newer
  • Computer GPUs: NVIDIA (GTX970 or better)
  • Wireless Router: 5GHz Channel, Wi-Fi 5 minimum
  • Headset: Meta Quest 2, 3, or Pro

Recommended

  • Computer Processor: Intel Core i5-4590/AMD FX 8350 equivalent or better
  • Computer Memory: 16 GB RAM
  • Computer GPUs: NVIDIA (RTX2070 or better)
  • Network: Broadband Internet connection
  • Wireless Router: Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E

Supported Input/Controllers

  • Oculus Touch and Pro Controllers

Please note: other input devices may work even if they aren’t officially supported.

Of course, this isn’t the first time SteamVR games are available to Meta Quest users. There have been ways to accomplish the same feat for years, starting with the Oculus Air Link. However, that software hasn’t been updated in a long time since Meta switched entirely to wireless headsets, so this Steam Link app definitely makes it easier and more seamless to play SteamVR titles on Quest devices.

Meta released the Quest 3 mixed reality headset on October 10, priced at $499, albeit with Asgard’s Wrath 2 (read Kai’s impressions of that game here) bundled. At some point this month, Quest users should also receive the previously announced support for Xbox Cloud Gaming. Provided they’ve got a subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, they’ll be able to stream Xbox games on their headsets.
