Output so far from the 184 panel array is 42MWh, meeting “over 80% of the Minster’s energy needs at peak”, according to Solar Edge, whose equipment was installed by Associated Clean Technologies (‘ACT’).

In 1984, lightening started a roof-top fire at the Minster that took four years to repair.

“This is an incredibly important building – the largest Gothic cathedral north of the Alps – however it is also a building with an unfortunate history of fire,” said Minster director of works Alex McCallion. “We worked with our insurance company, EIG, to reassure them, and us, that we were able to address the possible risk to the fabric [from installing solar]. We chose Solar Edge technology primarily for peace of mind.”

ACT designed the system with power optimisers beneath each solar panels for independent operation, circumventing string shut-down caused by shadows from the complex roof architecture.

The optimisers, branded S-Series, continuously monitor connector heating for early indication of potential faults. “If excessive heat is detected, the system can automatically prevent an electrical arc from forming”, claimed Solar Edge.

The installation also includes a fire-fighter gateway that is wired into the building’s fire alarm system and allows the entire solar array to be shut down manually or automatically.

A further automated system reduces panel voltages to touch-safe levels when the inverter or grid is shut down. “This dramatically lowers the risk of electrical shock, allowing emergency responders or maintenance teams to safely access the roof,” according to Solar Edge.

The Minster’s solar panels are part of a plan to decarbonise the Chapter of York’s estate, which has more than 50 buildings.

So far, the estate generate over 120MWh each year – contributing towards the Church of England’s 2030 net-zero target, said Solar Edge.
