The M3 Ultra is currently Apple’s fastest custom chipset, with its most powerful configuration offering a 32-core CPU and an 80-core GPU, and while it took its sweet time to receive an announcement, those core counts are only going to get higher as the SoC’s immediate successors arrive. According to the latest report, the Cupertino giant is working on multiple releases and has plans to announce an Apple Silicon that will flaunt up to six times the number of CPU and GPU cores as the M3 Ultra.
The M6 and M7 are also said to be in development, with a new Apple Silicon that serves as their successor in the works too
Later this year, Apple is expected to officially announce the M5, which will power a slew of updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. However, the company is not taking a break in obtaining an edge against the competition, because a Bloomberg report, whose details were spotted by AppleInsider, talks about the M6 and M7, which are codenamed ‘Komodo’ and ‘Borneo,’ respectively. Additionally, a new SoC that has yet to receive a name is also under development and is codenamed ‘Sorta.’
It is currently unconfirmed if Sorta will be Apple’s M8 or if it will be targeted for a completely different application. What is interesting about this report is that the M4 Hidra codenamed ‘Hidra’ was seemingly in the works, but there has been no update if the company intends to launch it in the future. Then again, Apple is experimenting with in-house solutions that will tout two, four, or even six times the number of CPU and GPU cores as the M3 Ultra, and assuming there are no development roadblocks, we could witness unprecedented compute and graphics capabilities, coupled with on-device AI performance uplifts.
It is unsurprising to learn that Apple has been working on future chipsets that are years away from seeing a release, but the California-based giant possibly wants an upper hand against its rivals, with the only real threat being Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite. The current-generation M4 lineup, which comprises of the M4 Pro and M4 Max, have already established a noteworthy reputation and Apple intends to maintain this advantage.
