Dr Despina Moschou with LoCKAmp replaceable lab on chip printed circuit board

Lab-on-chip speciallist Moschou developed ‘LoCKAmp’, a high-speed covid-19 test at Bath.

“As well as the LoCKAmp, which within 3 minutes completes gold-standard genetic-based testing techniques previously only possible in a lab, Dr Moschou has filed eight patents relating to lab-on-chip, lab-on-printed circuit board and diagnostic technologies,” according to the University. “She has founded two companies: biotIP, and Tesla Diagnostix which has developed the world’s first device to use patients’ saliva to accurately monitor glucose levels.”

Moschou also supervises Team Bath Biodevices without Borders, a student engineering team which has developed a portable water quality monitor to help detect and map safe water sources for communities around the world, and in 2023 helped to secure UK Research & Innovation funding for a project intended to equip Bath engineering graduates from diverse background with entrepreneurial skills – ‘Building unconventional engineering careers: Creating your unique fit’.

EAMBES is a not-for-profit international organisation that seeks to improve the health of European citizens by engineering and science.

“It’s a huge honour to be elected to such an organisation as EAMBES,”, said Moschou. “It’s an acknowledgement of years of work and research alongside my colleagues and peers. I feel it is a recognition of the support the University and the faculty of engineering and design provides to research in biological and healthcare engineering.”
