ITEN Powency 150uAh Solid-State Batteries

Called PWY0150S, it will has a minimum capacity of 150µAh and a nominal 2.3V terminal voltage – actual charge-discharge range is 2.7 to 1.5V, and nominal charging is constant voltage at 2.7V.

Cycle life, charged and discharged at 1C (150µA), is 1,000 cycles to 100µAh at 25°C and 100% depth of discharge, the company told Electronics Weekly, however it is not intended for such use, but rather the bursty load of a periodic transmitter.

“We have evaluated the PWY0150S powering a LAN wireless sensor with deep discharge mode for the battery. After 700,000 sensor activations and Bluetooth low-energy communications, the battery was still performing as day one,” said ITEN marketign director Jean-Michel Bidault.

Can we have some more details?

“The wireless sensor was powered by a photo-voltaic cell and the battery was delivering about 10mA peak currents for 15ms pulse lengths to activate the system,” replied Bidault.

Most recently, the company announced 200C discharge capability for this cell, which is 30mA, but would not reveal cycle life numbers when Electronics Weekly asked.

“One thing that can be said is: estimating a 200C cycle lifetime is cumbersome as [it is] fully design and use-case dependent,” said Bidault. “To give an order of magnitude: a peak current of 30mA for 50ms consumes less than 0.5µAh of a fully charged 150µAh battery.”

They are capable at high temperature, enduring up to 250 cycles at 100% depth of discharge at 70°C.

At low temperature, the cells are said to retain at least 50% of their capacity at -20°C.

Charging is possible across 0 to 70°C and, in some circumstances it is possible to restore 80% of capacity in six minutes.

The batteries comply with RoHS and REACH and, with appropriate solder paste, can be infra-red re-flowed at up to 165°C.

According to the company, it has been sampling these devices for two years and they are with over 100 companies.

“The products are now qualified for full-scale production,” it said. “ITEN’s pilot line has the capacity to produce more than 30 million batteries per year, with ongoing plans to launch a high-capacity manufacturing facility by 2028.”
