PlayStation Productions, Sony’s division created in May 2019 specifically to adapt PlayStation IPs to film and TV formats, has made a slew of announcements today.
As you probably remember, Guerrilla’s Horizon franchise was supposed to be turned into a TV series to be streamed on Netflix. That project turned into dust following the scandal that involved the showrunner, but Horizon fans can rest assured that PlayStation Productions has now partnered with Columbia Pictures to work on a film adaptation instead. The news came during Sony’s CES 2025 hour-long presentation. No further details were shared at this time, and it may be a long while before the film debuts in theaters since it is said to be in the early stages of development. To be honest, the TV format might have been a better fit for Horizon, but we’ll take this anyway.
On the CES 2025 stage, Head of PlayStation Productions Asad Qizilbash also unveiled that a Helldivers movie is in production with Sony Pictures. This project is likewise still completely under wraps, though its announcement is not at all surprising given the incredible success of Helldivers 2.
There were other announcements, too. Aniplex will adapt the Ghost of Tsushima IP into an anime series based on the Legends multiplayer mode. The Ghost of Tsushima anime will premiere in 2027 on Sony-owned Crunchyroll. The previously announced Until Dawn movie adaptation also got a lot of details, courtesy of Ashley Brucks, president of Screen Gems (a Sony-owned film production company). Until Dawn will launch in theaters on April 25, featuring a new story with new characters, although actor Peter Stormare (who played Dr. Hill in the game) will be in the film, too. This was likely the target of his tease from some time ago, rather than a game sequel, which some fans had hoped.
Last but certainly not least, Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann hopped on the CES 2025 stage to announce that the much awaited second season of HBO’s The Last of Us TV series will drop in April. There’s also a new trailer to go along with the news.
Interestingly, The Last of Us Part II Remastered is also dropping in early April on PC, likely to ensure PC gamers can experience the story without being spoiled by the TV show’s second season.
