HMS Hampshire launched on the Clyde

So, 64 years ago, started a story in Electronics Werkly’s edition of March 22nd 1961.

The story continues:

Hampshire, a County class destroyer is expected to join her sister ship HMS Devonshire in the Fleet next year.


With a standard displacement of over 5,000 tons, Hampshire will carry one Seaslug guided weapons system, four radar-controlled 4.5-in. guns in twin mountings forward, and two Seacat close-range guided weapons systems fitted abaft the after funnel.

The destroyer will have the latest air and surface warning radars. The combined operations room and weapon direction room is fitted with electronic plotting facilities.

For anti-submarine work the ship will be fitted with the latest underwater detection equipment and a Westland Wessex helicopter carrying dipping asdic and homing torpedoes.
