The Electronics Weekly team share some fingerposts – their picks of the week, in terms of announcements, developments, product releases, quotes, or anything else in the wide world of electronics, that caught their eye…
Caroline Hayes, editor
I thought Siemens Digital buys Downstream Technologies was interesting. The PCB design tools complement the larger scale offerings at Siemens, broadening the company’s reach in the design space..
David Manners, components editorWhat caught my eye this week was the MoD putting £200n into compound semis and looking for partners.
Steve Bush, technology editorDiodes has come up with a neat 3D magnetic sensor intended to be the measuring element in manual controls. While it will need an actuating magnet, the sensor part comes in 3 x 3mm package, so it could inspire some novel compact user interfaces. It will take 80 readings a second for under 100µA and, impressively, it powers down to 9nA.
Alun Williams, web editorWhat caught my eye was the Satellite Applications Catapult simulating microgravity in Westcott. It has upgraded its In-Orbit Servicing, Assembly and Manufacturing (ISAM) facility to add a gravity offload system. The steel structure – complete with robotic arm – supports the testing of a range of “payloads”. For example, simulated space debris or orbital refuelling targets or service modules.
