It is as an advanced guide to hardware hacking. In other words it will be relevant for engineers wanting to get their hands dirty with the innards of devices. It’s not for beginners, or the mildly curious.

For example, it covers how to read the software out of single chip computers, even when their configuration is not to allow the firmware to be extracted.

And chapter titles such as ‘Chip Decapsulation’, ‘PIC Ultraviolet Unlock’, ‘Basics of Memory Extraction’ and ‘CMOS VLSI Interlude’ give an idea. I suspect you’ll either be running for the hills  or rising to a challenge…

Author

The book is written by Travis Goodspeed, an embedded systems reverse engineer from Tennessee. Apparently he is known as “the hillbilly hacker” and he collects memory extraction exploits for microcontrollers.

Finally, his recent projects include a CAD tool for extracting bits from mask ROM photographs.
